What We Know about Borderline Personality Disorder

As a therapist I was astonished to see how many of my collogues in the field did not accept to take on clients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I decided to make this my niche and focus on working with clients with BPD. After completing various trainings and working directly with many clients with BPD, I came to understand the disorder on a deeper level. When explaining this to my clients I always tend to say BPD is simply a lack of self-regulation due to childhood invalidation and past trauma. Similar to complex PTSD, BPD symptoms can be worked through, and are treatable with psychotherapy modalities mainly using dialectical behavioural therapy.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental health disorder characterized by intense and unstable emotions, impulsive behaviours, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, and a distorted self-image. People with BPD may struggle with self-identity, self-worth, and self-image. They may also have frequent and intense mood swings, often feeling angry, anxious, or depressed, and struggle to regulate their emotions. Individuals with BPD may engage in impulsive behaviours such as reckless driving, binge eating, self-harm, feeling like a burden, idolizing people/relationships, substance abuse, and risky sexual behaviour. They may also have a fear of abandonment, experience feelings of emptiness, and have a history of self-harm and suicidal thoughts and attempts/plans. BPD can be challenging to diagnose, and it often co-occurs with other mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. However, with proper treatment, including therapy, medication, and support from loved ones, people with BPD can manage their symptoms and live fulfilling lives.
