When we go through painful or overwhelming experiences, our brains do not always process what happened the way they process everyday memories. Instead, distressing experiences can become stored in the body in a raw, unprocessed form. These memories can continue to affect how we think, feel, and respond to the world, even years later.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy helps the brain complete the natural healing process that was interrupted by trauma. It allows clients to release emotional pain, calm the nervous system, and move forward with greater peace and self-trust.
At Mental Health and Freedom, I use EMDR as part of an integrated, trauma-informed approach that blends psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), and somatic awareness. My goal is to help clients reconnect with their inner strength and experience emotional balance after trauma or chronic stress.
EMDR is based on the understanding that our brains and bodies are designed to heal. When trauma or abuse overwhelms the system, that process can get stuck, leaving emotional “loops” that keep us in fight-or-flight mode.
In EMDR, we target those unresolved memories while using bilateral stimulation such as gentle side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This process helps the brain reprocess the memory safely, linking it to more adaptive and empowering beliefs.
Over time, the emotional intensity of the memory decreases. You still remember what happened, but it no longer feels as if it is happening to you.
What to Expect During EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy follows a structured yet flexible eight-phase process.
- History and Treatment Planning
We begin by exploring your history, current symptoms, and the patterns you would like to change. Together, we identify targets for EMDR work, such as specific memories, fears, or emotional themes. - Preparation
Before reprocessing begins, we build grounding and regulation tools so you feel safe and in control throughout the process. - Assessment
We focus on a specific memory and identify the related images, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs about yourself. - Desensitization
While recalling the memory, bilateral stimulation helps your brain process it differently, reducing distress and emotional charge. - Installation
We strengthen positive beliefs such as shifting from “I am powerless” to “I am safe and capable.” - Body Scan
You notice how your body feels to ensure any remaining tension is released. - Closure
Each session ends with grounding and emotional stabilization, so you leave feeling calm and centred. - Reevaluation
In the following sessions, we review progress and identify new targets as needed.
At Mental Health and Freedom, EMDR is especially effective for clients recovering from:
- Childhood trauma or emotional neglect
- Narcissistic abuse or toxic relationships
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and emotional dysregulation
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety and panic
- Grief and loss
- Low self-worth and chronic shame
- Medical trauma or major life stressors
Many clients notice that after EMDR, their emotional triggers lessen, their sleep improves, and they feel more grounded and confident in their daily lives.
EMDR Is Safe and Collaborative
EMDR does not involve retelling your trauma in detail. Instead, it focuses on helping your brain naturally process what was overwhelming at the time. You remain fully present and in control throughout the process, with continuous support and regulation tools to maintain emotional safety.
As a trauma-informed therapist, I tailor EMDR to your comfort level, pace, and readiness. Every step is guided by collaboration and compassion.
The Healing Power of Integration
EMDR helps integrate emotional, cognitive, and physical aspects of your experience. Clients often describe it as “the memory is still there, but it no longer controls me.” This integration creates a deeper sense of calm, empowerment, and self-compassion.
Healing is not about erasing the past. It is about reclaiming your power, making peace with your story, and feeling at home within yourself again.
